So the track car project took a little longer to begin, but shes underway. We started doing some lower cost projects first... I'll get to the goodies when the economy comes back up a bit, haha.

It's made in Google's SketchUp. It's pretty cool. Even allows to export to a CNC format so you can do milling from it :)

So had to put the crap back in the car that ill be racing with. Did a lot of hacking and cutting before the cage goes in. Kris came over and helped cut out the doors and do some dissecting of the dash :) The stock dash is pretty darn light when you pull all the crap out of it.

Rokkit
02-15-2010, 05:05 PM
Na I think i'll just leave it stock. If i decide to flock the dash later it's not bad to pull it out again... It only has like 2 bolts holding it on. I could prob remove it in about 10 minutes.. maybe less haha.

Either A. we need to do it outside, or B. you better have some big drop cloths/sheets/tarps to surround the area... the extra fibers are reusable (I laid down plastic sheets so i could regather it all).. But I did it outside on my back patio, and the rally car was 30ft away, and some fibers got blown onto it lol.
Its sooo worth it for the end result.. So nice.. so easy to clean.. and most importantly... no glare...

So really I can't catch a break lately - Went to try to fix the transfer gear bearing on the center diff (originally thought it was the rear bearings making a noise) Well, tried. Failed lol
My center has a heat fracture in the casing and the "free" transmission I picked up from a friend is totally obliterated lol. At least the bad bearing from my trans was still in one piece lol.
Anyone know where I can pick up a center diff or transfer case for an RS? <sad panda>

Good news is.. Checked the shed yesterday... I have about 1 1/2 cans of the flock glue, 1/2 a bag of fibers, and my applicator...
Just order a bag or two.. One bag SHOULD be enough if all you are doing is the dash.. But you never know if you might want to do more (Door Panels or anything like that)..

Final transmission work was finished up last night. Went together fairly easy considering the destruction of some of the bearings. A lot of the time was cleaning and re-lubing. Glad I did because you'll see the goop lining the inside of the pinion shaft, haha.

Are you getting a universal quickener? If so, let me know how it works out. We are thinking about one for the rally car, but i'm a little concerned about the whole universal one cut & weld thing..

I don't know about "universal" but L+E did a bunch of rally/track cars in the past. I opted to have someone else do the cut/weld stuff on critical steering components :) He's adding the GD style splines to it as well to support the US WRX/STI racks.

Not a problem - From what i've been told it's an invaluable mod when racing. From my personal experience driving a bunch of open wheel cars with 3/4 turn lock to lock - I love quick racks lol.
The nature of the quickener will increase the amount of effort required to turn the wheel by roughly 15-20% but that's just the nature of the beast.

Also installed the roll center kit from Whiteline - with the full weight of the car over the front end - the a-arms are sitting a bit higher than level. This Roll Center kit should drop them down a bit. Also Sean cut up a nice plate for the sunroof - aluminum.

Last night I started working on the Lexan windows. It's a bit more work than I expected mostly because I only have a pair of metal shears to cut the stuff. Luckily, it's only 1/16" thick so it's not too bad. I used a cardboard template of the glass window to start my cutting. I added about 1/4" to the outside of the template for some wiggle room, but found I didn't need it in the end. It was extra cutting, but adding material is always the hard part when you cut something too short haha. The fitment is ok, nothing spectacular, but I think it will look ok when I put the trim back in and seal it down. I fastened it with some self tapping, hex head screws which I popped right into the metal window frame in the body. 1 down - 4 to go.

Come on Dan... You of all people can make this work lol.
I just removed the rear window (without breaking it), put it up on saw horses and laid cardboard over it. Traced out the outline of the window, cut cardboard, placed it on the lexan and traced/cut.
I needed to trim a bit here and there, but the fit is nice, sits exactly where the stock window sits. add a fastener every 2 inches and bam. heh

I did this for a 911 at the shop once and was concerned about the way the center of the lexan had a tendency to droop, so we made some stiffeners out of Al to keep it 'flexed up' so to speak. I was wondering if your lexan was going to have the same sag issue? The 911 rear window is a bit flatter than a GC I think, so it might not be an issue. Here's the 911

It does flex, I actually picked up 2 1/2" aluminum strips for the reason of keeping it from falling down, but the shape of the rear window actually doesn't let it fall in, which is cool.
If i was doing the front window that would be a different story but that will be glass.
Thanks for the badass comment :) I hope it will drive well too :)

Front window has to be glass Dan... DOT rules. ;)
And if it were me, i'd actually do an old school shelby trick... On the old mustang fastbacks, they actually took the rear windows, and slanted them, so that air could actually flow out of the back of the car, and improved the aerodynamics since the windows were opened all the time allowing air in...

Yup, I know that, however, rear and sides can be lexan as long as it is equivalent thickness of original glass. We might do quarters and rear, but leave doors glass so's we can bust they out when we go into a lake

I would assume open front windows would create an high pressure zone in the cockpit eventually leading to a "pocket" of air that outside air would flow around... If you opened up the back and let it flow though wouldn't it cause some turbulence issues and additional drag?
Where's the fucking aerospace engineer when you need one...

The next logical step to installing the rear window is the sides. Let me just say - the rear window was a pain in the arse compared to the sides. So much easier to cut, fit, and install. Also received my steering column - before I installed it I did a final paint and prep on the floor and on the dash beam just to make sure that I wasn't going to hate my life later.

Got the quickener back and installed. It did require a bit more "modifying" and tweaking than I would of expected for spending 500$, but whatever - it's in and it's working. The only hesitance I have is the brake pedal hits the planetary gear housing. That being said, the brake system is not bled which will dramatically impact how far/close to the floor the pedal goes. Larry from L&E Fabrication said it is normal and I won't have any problems. I hope he's right.
Added another lexan window and modifying headers to clear turbo x-member for startup.

A little welding never stood in my way before :P
Last night I was focused on getting the suspension modified. When I was at EFI there were a few clearance issues we ran into on the alignment rack so Jack swung by and helped me modify a few things. I re-drilled the strut towers to mount the camber plates so they don't have any caster adjustment and removed the helper springs in the rear to gain more clearance on the inside of the wheel. shortened up the lateral links and a few other things. Then I made myself a sick ABS plastic dash cover to mount my gauges to :)

Note to self - "When raising the rear sub frame up - check to make sure things aren't going to be crushed due to lack of room!" - Last night I fixed up the brake line that broke. I had to drop the rear sub frame and remove the passenger side straps off the gas tank just to replace this hard line. The issue was when I raised the sub frame up 1/4 inch or so, I neglected to see there was a brake line run in a very tight area between the frame and sub frame. I ran a new line (with the help from Doug - he loves coming over and removing/installing sub frames) and put everything back where it was.
After everything was bolted back up I figured, what the hell it's 1am anyway, why not install the rear Lexan window. Done and done... Now I need to figure out how to attach the stock trim pieces...

So I'm down to the short list - tied up a lot of loose ends last night. Jack came over again and helped dial in the alignment now that the suspension bits are properly adjusted and modified. WRX axles were added to the rear (I was maxing out the RS axles). I laid out the harnesses to map out where I want to run them and reassembled the steering column electronics (headlights and wipers). I cleaned up the engine bay adding the timing belt cover and fabricating up a bracket to hold the power steering reservoir. Now I have to buy a few more minor things (trunk gasket, rear view mirror, bulbs for the brake lights, etc.)

Haha nope but it's way too low to make up the ramp and on the trailer - I'm going to have to do some work with 2x4's to make longer, less steep ramps
Alpine.$tar^
04-08-2010, 11:21 PM
just buy a 2x8 and cut it to use as ramps. They should be stiff enough to support the car.
ScrapinSTi
04-09-2010, 12:09 PM
Yeah... use 2x8 or 2x10, not 2x4... 2x4 will snap.... And Home Depot & Lowes sells ramp kits that have nice rubber stoppers at one end to hit the ground, and a pinnable metal bracket at the top to pin to your trailer/tailgate.

Last night I just spent some time working on my short list of "things left to do". I fastened the fuel and brake lines to the chassis and pulled them away from the driver/passenger's legs. On the fuel side I separated the main high pressure line from the return/vent lines just for the heck of it. Figured it would reduce any wear/breaks. I then moved to securing the interior wiring harness. Wrapped a a lot of the exposed parts in electrical tape and fastened it to the chassis. I also modified the seat bracket for the drivers seat to move it a bit closer to the pedals and bought some grade 8 hardware. Fixed the trim and I picked up my newly painted hood elements and fog covers.

Finally found some pictures from the SCCA Auto-X on the 11th. These aren't the best and I'm working on getting some video, but they work. Interestingly enough they do show the full body roll on both images as I'm hard into a corner - virtually none haha. I've been thinking about coming down in the rear about another 1/2 inch, but I'll 1) need to wait until RaceComp sends me my new springs and 2) see the other side of the body roll (fully compressed) to see if I'm too close to the fenders.

Installed my roll bar padding last night - Came out pretty well although I was caught off guard by paying double what I expected. I got the pretty nice padding (was expecting the cheapy stuff at 12$/section - this stuff was like 40 lol)
Anyway, used a hole saw to notch out the padding where it overlapped intersecting bars and then started with the longest pieces first. I think it came out pretty nice.

Ya it's a high density rubber composite.
No, the cheaper stuff is SFI certified roll bar padding - This stuff just has the same effect but is a lot thinner - and more costly... ug.
Pipe isolation is not permitted. heh.

I agree with that. Ever felt the padding over a Jeep cage? Scary! Also, when you take a car apart like you did on yours, you realize how little material there is between the a-pillar and your head, a bit of plastic, but that's about it!
Here's the dual density stuff "soft" that I was talking about.

ScrapinSTi

The padding law is a distance from driver type of thing. In a wrangler they dont need the padding since everything is so far away from the drivers head. They put that factory stuff on there for the dumbasses that bump their heads when the tops are off.
Thats the same stuff we used in our rally car too... I've got to paint the cage and put it all back in sometime soon lol.

Ya ran it at another local auto-x just to try and work out the kinks. Found out my clutch is a little odd ball. Fades when it heats up so I'm going to replace the slave and line.
Last night I finally replaced the stock exhaust - built a nice 2.5" mid section (mated with the aftermarket axle back I had on the car just for noise restriction reasons). welds won't win awards, (Kris took his TIG back, bahh) but whatever :)

So over the weekend I worked on the RS a bit more. Cut out a bunch of unneeded metal off the front of the car (could cut more, but let's not go nuts). I removed material basically because I'm adding weight with the addition of the oil cooler and brake ducts.
Fabbed up some brackets and mounting points for the oil cooler and hooked it up to the thermostatically controlled sandwich adapter I have. used -10 line to keep the restriction down.
Installed some inlets for the brake ducts. These will be modified over time - they are just temporary to get some air on the brakes in time for Lime Rock.

I'll be there on the 17th. It's a Thursday (which is kinda lame, but whatever).

So I had the car up at Lime Rock last Thursday and she really performed well. I was running high 1:04 laps on street tires when I wasn't in traffic... The car can be setup a bit more to get rid of the push at entry and stablize it under braking. After 3 sessions of some pretty good abuse, I have virtually 0 brake wear and tires are still good.
I had a guy come up to me after one of my sessions and ask "So what turbo do you have on this thing?" - My response is... "I don't - it's the stock 2.5". The expression on his face was pricelesss haha.
I did have a small problem with leaking coolant. The car never overheated, but I'm thinking the water pump may be bad due to the previous event at Monticello. I'll take her apart and prep her for ANOTHER trip to Monticello on Friday.

Crap, I thought you had a turbo motor in that. That makes the 1:04 even more impressive!

Monticello went awesome - car ran like a champ and ended up running the Durezzas to the point of overheating... Time to R-Comps!
And I got signed off for HPDE-3 :) Woot.

Looks like you had a good time! We won't be in the garage too much this weekend, but probably next weekend we'll be doing some suspension work on the rally car if you're free. I should have a freshly painted garage floor by then!

Na, we were doing some nice lead-follow sessions... he had much more strait line speed but we were pretty close in the corners.
I need another 2-300 HP to keep up with him on the straits

Ya it's the header, I had to extend it down to use the cross member I did - I have a GD N/A cross member that ill be swapping in and shortening the headers so i can do an undertray setup

Thanks - I had a little help from a few friends and the girlfriend so it wasn't 100% me but I do think we turned this puppy around pretty quick :)
