Hey Noah! do you know if this year/model has an electronic or mechanical speed sensor in the tranny?
About the 2.2, im not sure exactly what will be done with it yet since it runs so nicely. But will let you know if im going to part with it.
Bryan, i dont know what youre talking about...ive had snows for most of the life of the redwagon haha. but that little while after the swap really counted i suppose!
ScrapinSTi
01-25-2010, 12:36 PM
lol! funny you mention that... in my 97 the speedo died yesterday... In my 97 its cable. I think 99 is Phase2, which is sensor...

01-25-2010, 03:32 PM
Haha yea we just had to fix randys 97 OBS, the tab off the speedo cable broke off in the tranny.
I was expecting to see a cable on mine but couldnt catch a glimpse of it with the intake on. One other thing wrong with it is the coolant temp sensor. I dont see a cel but the cluster is showing no temp even after 20 min idle and revving to charge battery.
ScrapinSTi
01-25-2010, 03:46 PM
how hard was it to run a new cable? I'm NOT looking forward to that...
hook up an OBD scanner and see if that registers a temp..
kawikid20o2
01-25-2010, 04:05 PM
The cable is not bad, you should check the part that goes into the tranny first to see if its broken like randys was since its two peices but even if you need to change the whole thing, it pulls out of the cluster real easy.
Rob T
01-25-2010, 05:16 PM
Hey you move quick!
Shouldn't you have changed the rear diff in the red wagon before you made this thread so you could really get started on swapping the trans and diff in this beast.
kawikid20o2
01-25-2010, 05:31 PM
Haha yea i know, its a project thread though.
And i could grab another open diff from my buddy that has a couple layin around ya know.

I'm gonna throw it on the lift tonight...
What do you mean part that goes into the tranny? Its not just a cable w a threaded end?

it separates like 6-8" after the tranny if you need to just do the part that threads in.
ScrapinSTi
01-25-2010, 07:36 PM
ahhh... that explains why there were 2 parts listed on the websites.. one was $22, one was $43.. So maybe i'll be lucky and just the $22 part broke. Or they just came separated...
kawikid20o2
01-25-2010, 07:46 PM
Yup just check it out in the air pull the cable out of the cluster which you should be able to do without pulling the cluster and see if it turns while ur driving of running it in the air.

I might have a set of RS 16" 6 spokes to get rid of in the spring, not sure though as I may keep them and get I-pikes for a winter tire.
kawikid20o2
01-27-2010, 08:20 PM
how much would you be looking for? Im pretty much buying a set wrx wheels tonight from rokkit for 200bucks. im pretty set on those, pretty good deal i think.
Jim511
01-27-2010, 08:46 PM
Prob not much, 100-150 maybe? One has a small bend but doesn't affect performance. I'd go with rokkit cause I won't be swapping my tires over to my 5 spokes until maybe march if not april.

Got the engine/tranny/ECU out and installed the engine in a customers car since she blew up a 2.5 SOHC im going to rebuild it and install in this car with a new RS tranny and rear end. Also on the way are 04 STi struts complete, gold 03 wrx wheels, RS front brakes, Hella 500's, maybe delta cams, header and sti catback exhaust not sure though yet on those.

Paint the 16s more of a gunmetal color. OBSs with wheels that are close in color to the bottom of the car look amazing IMO.

Definitely go for the sti exhaust, I put one on my RS and it looks awesome and it was free! I agree if you dont paint the car to gunmetal the wheels, theres a guy on RS25 with a wagon like yours hes swapping with UK wrx 17's and it goes really well, I like the obs 2 tone, you gonna keep that front bumper? I think a JNA lip would look sweet on it!
kawikid20o2
02-22-2010, 06:46 PM
im not sure what to do with the front bumper, i may try cut and mold it like an RS bumper to accept the Hellas better. what is the JNA lip? never seen it before.
Jim511
02-22-2010, 07:10 PM
Jnaperformance.com they sell lips for 02+ cars but they will help you retrofit one to your car, great prices and great guys. Sounds weird but I kinda like those bumpers better than the RS bumpers. Even a DIY garage lip would look great on that car

Ill prolly grab something for it, DIY lip is a possibility i really do want an RS bumper though. If i can find one for a reasonable price i will mold this one to what i want to accept the hellas.

The DIY lip Jack from EFI had on his old OBS looked pretty good, maybe a little too low IMO. It's almost exactly what I was going to do on my old Ver 4 bumper when I had it. FWIW, it's not the normal garage door stuff, I think it's conveyor belt gasket or something like that, basically flat 1/8" thick rubber riveted onto the front of the bumper.
kawikid20o2
02-26-2010, 03:26 AM
yea the hellas were a hella good deal lol! i think im putting an HID kit in them too, might as well since i have some extra components laying around.
Rob, That lip is just flat 1/8" rubber or an angle piece? how would you rivet it if its truly flat?

I really have to try and dig up the pic I had of it done on a Ver 4 bumper that was for sale forever ago on Yahoo Japan. I might have it on my home PC.

All I know is there were posts on "the other place" of EFI trying to buy some kid's OBS because Jack was looking for a new DD.

Found an 01 RS bumper skin for a decent deal last night, going to pick that up sunday morning in NY. This weekend i will be working on the motor and should have that pretty much set to drop in over the spring break along with the RS tranny and diff. After that it is on to the body work and painting. I have decided to paint the whole car JBP/similar instead of preserving the two tone.
Also if anyone knows someone with a vented hood and/or wagon driver door for sale LMK yo quierro.

You just gonna do the basics when you do the body or do what you should, ie: get rid of the roof strips, add side skirts and get the JDM rear spoilers? God damn do GFs look good with those two spoilers hanging off the back.

The second GF is actually a JDM car so it has the smooth roof and those roof rails from the factory. You can get the "JDM" rails from some US cars but they aren't very common as it was kind of sporadic what cars they came on. I was trying to get my brother in law to guy a 95 out in NY somewhere last year that had them.

Buy the GF210s from the guy in Danbury for $135, that'll really bring it down, they're even STI specific so they're stiffer.
BTW, you gonna be around this weekend? I got an EL header/uppie coming and could use a hand installing it if you're free.

This weekend im going home to take the timing components off and get some nasty locking thread inserts for the idlers because this blocks threads are really weak, already 2 idlers have failed, one being the tensioner. Those threads came out on the bolts as i loosened them even by hand! So i spend $50shipped and got a quality set of solid inserts from www.mcmastercarr.com who shipped them immediately even before i paid!!! Great company! These inserts are 14mm X 1.5 external thread and the factory 10mm X 1.25 internal thread and come with a tool to drive them in and lock them permanently so they will never pull out again. I figured its money well spent! I'll let you guys know how it works out!

put loctite on the inserts... HeliCoils are worth their weight in gold, but work even better if you put a dab of loctite on them...

These are what i picked up:
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-sjc1/hs328.snc3/28990_593751295969_48806380_34295977_6186187_n.jpg
Way stronger than a helicoil(not knockin em but this has way too much riding on it) as they have 4 locking keys and 1.5 pitch thread external, 1.25 internal for the stock bolt. I tried the helicoil with locktite overnight and it still only took about 10ft/lb before it came loose and i had to hit 30lb for timing tensioner.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs281.snc3/27733_593775552359_48806380_34296272_1877050_n.jpg
Took the opportunity to replace the other idlers with some that didn't get used for a job i was supposed to do. (car got sold)
So the motor is all back together and ready to install!

Makes me wonder bc i've never had a Helicoil fail on me...Used blue locktite, broke Tang and the bolt was just spinning in there and it was the correct bolt for the kit/tap, i made sure. It wasnt a Helicoil brand kit it was the 'OEM' autozone one for $30.

yeah... Especially if its going into aluminum, use purple not blue... Blue is "automotive" and just not as good as blue.
Me personally... I use green on HeliCoils.. :)

Because the rear sti strut top hats are wide so i mounted them a little bit out from stock, gunna fix it with camber bolts

Today it was rainy out so i decided to pull the headliner and trim take care of some rust issues on the roof and at the same time paint A,B,+C pillars black along with all handles and the headliner while it was out. I painted all the plastics with duplicolor bumper and trim paint and the headliner and visors with duplicolor vinyl and fabric black paint. keep in mind that the flash shows off imperfections that you wouldnt normally see so Heres some pics:

im curious about the rust repair myself... How you did it and how it came out..
kawikid20o2
06-12-2010, 12:17 AM
I didnt post pics yet but this is what im in the middle of doing to attempt to repair the rust...really it needs a new roof but short of cuting that out or cutting out the rusted areas all you can do is this:
1. Grind rust spots down till all the flakey rust is off and the paint is stripped surrounding these areas. I used an 8" sander with 24 grit disc to do this.
2. Coat heavily with Rust converter, I use the kind you brush out because you want to lay it on really thick so it soaks through to all the rust and let dry over night. And recoat both top and bottom of the panel. The idea here is that you want to seal the rusted metal from air and moisture so it stops spreading.
3. Apply a coat of long hair fiberglass body filler to bring the strength back to the panel and further seal area. Since it shouldn't have rusted through more than a few pin holes it doesn't take too much to fill the dip you caused by sanding.
4. Sand flat with 80-100 grit disc (this time you need a respirator cause the fiberglass filler makes a nasty mess you don't want to breath)
5. Fill with light/medium weight body filler just to skim and level out the pits and ridges in the glass filler.
6. Sand with 150- 320 grit by hand with a block then wet sand up to 600 grit
7. Prime with sanding primer and wet sand each coat till smooth
8. Wet sand up to 1500 grit and wash and dry/ wipe with surface prep, before finish coating.
And the sad part is that even after all of this, it could still come back, cuz after all, it is cancer.:banghead:

that's quite the process for rust removal.
and the car is looking good justin, esp with the rs front bumper.
ScrapinSTi
06-12-2010, 11:48 AM
yeah... i'm trying to decide if i wanna do a sand/glass patch, or cut out a square bigger than the rust, weld a patch panel from underneath, then just use bondo to fill & smooth... That way the cancer is gone, even if the roof is filled with bondo lol

Dusty, Justin, sry but that rear quarter rust isn't usually surface rust, it seems to start from the back and rust through. That rubber liner tends to speed it up by holding moisture and salt against the metal.

yeah, the dirt and crap sits perfectly behind that area on a little edge and then underneath the plastic fender trim... it's a horrible design. I noticed this weekend that my side skirt is starting to come off due to rust at the back clip in the fender area and a couple other clips that have broken off due to an incident. it might be time for the small fender flares.... or wide panels (dreams)

Well it was but i decided to clear coat it after all for another $115 it was well worth it here are the results ( Pics outside are before clear inside are right after) I just finished tonight!
*It wasnt just that i wanted to clear it i also made mistakes and ran out of paint fixing them so clear was the only option that made sense to make it uniform finish. Look at second pic rear door and rear 1/4 pnl have hazy and saggy finish.
