You're right, the rear tophats are a different bolt pattern/placement.

I'm tempted to do it in my 03 WRX but see how close the back wheel moved to the frame... My rims are too big for that.

I don't know for sure because they should have the tapered top springs that all 04+ cars used. Also, another thing I was never sure about is that I know you need that Scooby921 spacer to use new tophats on old struts but I don't know what you need to do to use new struts with old tophats(if they'll sit flush/tight).
